Staying Powered-up Outdoors

October 20, 2022

There are a few reasons people would want to have power while being outdoors either on a trip or a survival type situation. Camping people tend to get away from large amounts of light pollution and usually a camp fire will suffice their needs. Sometimes, however, people need a little power to add some ease to their ventures. A bit of power can provide just enough light to enjoy a card game in the tent, allow people to see what they are cooking in at night or even help them get ready for bed in an otherwise dark environment. Small amounts of power will also allow for people to keep their cell phones charged in case of an emergency. For survivalist power is used less often and is normally in the form of battery power.

Battery Power

Battery powered equipment is one of the oldest forms of portable power known to man. Alessandro Volta invented the first battery in 1800. As time and technological progressed, they evolved from large jars with different metals and wires, to what we all know today as D cells and ‘AAA’s. Batteries today have a wide array of uses from flashlights and scopes, to home decorations and starting your car.

A flashlight is the most commonly used item powered by a battery. Survivalists and outdoorsman use them to see through the darkness of the woods while campers use them to show their children that there is nothing outside their tent. These devices come in a wide range of styles, different lumens, and uses each with different types of batteries. Be sure to check for what type of batteries your lights take so you can get the correct ones. There are some lights which come with rechargeable batteries rather than replacing them.

Solar Power

Today’s technology has advanced to where we now have solar power that fits in our pockets. These small power sources absorb sun light and convert it into energy used to power a cell phone, recharge a flashlight, or other small items around the camp site. When purchasing one of these devices be sure to read about its usage because some are more capable of holding energy than others.

Portable Generators

Many survivalist, campers, and homes have portable generators for various reasons. Survivalist will have a generator in their bug out area to keep them off the grid a little easier while tenters may use it for cooking, a light source around the camp site or hooking up to their pull behind camper depending on the type of camping you’re doing. People use portable generators around their home too. If a hurricane hits your area causing power outages, many people will start their generators. The smaller, yet portable ones are used to keep refrigerators cold so as not to spoil the food, and a light or two on inside at night. People with generators, portable or not, are always grateful for the purchase they made especially when they are needed most.

Conclusion

It doesn’t matter if you’re gearing up for the apocalypse or taking the family away for a weekend in the woods, staying powered up in the wilderness is possible in a multitude of ways. Solar power, generators and batteries are just the more common ways to aid us in our adventures. Always be sure to check your equipment and know based on your situation what variations of energy will you need?
